Scary Spiderweb Cupcakes

Happy Halloween!!!

I have some Scary Spiderweb Cupcakes for you today but unfortunately, they're scary for all the wrong reasons.  These are supposed to be cute (yet scary) little gumdrop spiders, not weird, freaky Jujube spiders.  Unfortunately, black gumdrops don't seem to exist in Toronto.  Anywhere.  I went to eight (yes...) stores looking for black gumdrops - Walmart, No Frills, Price Chopper, Metro, Loblaws, Shoppers Drug Mart, Pharma Plus, and last but not least, my husband went to the one place we were SURE would have them - Bulk Barn.  Wrong.  No black gumdrops anywhere.  He was afraid to come home empty-handed so brought me black Jujubes and I made do with those.  Trust me, making scary spiders out of Jujubes wasn't that easy, especially as I'm not exactly what you'd call a crafty person.  Baking and cooking I can do, crafts I can't.  I'm sure Martha Stewart could have made incredible spiders with one hand tied behind her back, but Martha Stewart I'm not.

I know I could have just planned something else to post for Halloween, but I was bound and determined I was going to make "Scary Spiderweb Cupcakes".  Even if it killed me.  Now looking at the pics, I realize I didn't even make the legs all the same size, lol.  I think the spider would have a bit of trouble walking.  I actually took the easy way out and only made two spiders for the pics and just piped icing on the rest of the cupcakes.  Oh and the red eyes were my husband's idea.  He did as good a job making the eyes the same size as I did the legs.  We're a great team.

Anyway, if you go to Life Made Delicious, you can see what these cupcakes are supposed to look like. I really love the idea of making the spiders out of gumdrops.  I think they look really cool, which is why I wanted to make them.  That's what mine are supposed to look like.

Nevertheless, they're chocolate cupcakes, how can they be bad?  Although my spider-making skills need a little work, I have a whole year to practice now.  Oh and I definitely need to work on my orange frosting making skills as well.  I'm not exactly sure what that colour is.

If you're in the Toronto area and you think you might want to make Scary Spiderweb Cupcakes next year for Halloween, start looking for the black gumdrops now.  And good luck.

Have a happy and safe Halloween everyone.

Enjoy!
