Ben and Jerry's. I think it's fair to say most people think of ice cream when they hear those three words. I remember when Ben and Jerry's ice cream wasn't available in Canada and how excited I was when it finally arrived up here. It was always my favourite ice cream and no trip to the States was complete without a dish or cone of Chunky Monkey or Cherry Garcia. I'm so happy to be able to make it at home now courtesy of my new cookbook, Ben & Jerry's Homemade Ice Cream and Dessert Book. When I received my ice cream maker, this cookbook was at the top of my wish list.
I didn't know which ice cream should be the first I'd try. Rolo? Kit Kat? Orange Cream Dream? Coconut? Mocha Swiss Chocolate Almond? Heath Bar Crunch? Oreo Mint? I finally settled on the Cherry Garcia and was not disappointed. It's sweet and creamy, filled with bing cherries and dark chocolate chunks and is a tribute to the late Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead.
I have to note here that all the recipes in this book contain raw eggs. That's not a concern for me, but I know it will be for some people. I'm not sure why all their recipes contain raw eggs unless it has to do with the fact that this cookbook was written 23 years ago and maybe raw eggs weren't a problem then? I don't know, but be warned in case this is an issue for you and you were thinking of buying this book.
This ice cream went beyond my expectations. I'm still surprised for some reason just how good homemade ice cream is. I can't imagine eating store bought again, no matter how premium it is. There are numerous recipes from this book I want to try. I think next will be Kit Kat (for my son).
At the beginning of the book there is a history of Ben and Jerry and how they came to be where they are today. There are about 90 recipes in all. The recipes are simple and you get wonderful homemade ice cream.
I definitely recommend this cookbook. One of the best $10.00 I have ever spent!
Enjoy!
Cherry Garcia Ice Cream
Printer-Friendly Version
1/4 cup shaved plain chocolate*
1/4 cup fresh Bing cherries, halved and pitted (you may use canned cherries, but be sure and drain the syrup)**
2 large eggs
3/4 cup sugar
2 cups heavy or whipping cream
1 cup whole milk
*I used 70% dark chocolate and did not shave it, but cut it into chunks
**I had to use canned
Place the shaved/broken up chocolate and the cherries in separate bowls. Cover and refrigerate.
Whisk the eggs in a mixing bowl until light and fluffy, 1 to 2 minutes. Whisk in the sugar, a little at a time, then continue whisking until completely blended, about 1 minute more. Pour in the cream and mlk and whisk to blend.
Transfer the mixture to an ice cream maker and freeze following the manufacturer's instructions.
After the ice cream stiffens (about 2 minutes before it is done), add the chocolate and the cherries, then continue freezing until the ice cream is ready. (I then put mine into a container and into the freezer to harden as it's more like soft serve at that point).
Makes 1 quart

ReplyDeleteThanks for the info on the raw eggs - wondering aloud if they use those in their commercial products?
I thought I died and went to heaven the first time I had Ben and Jerry's! Enjoy your new book!

ReplyDeleteI just found your Cookbook Sunday and your blog from another blog and am now following. I missed the timeframe for this party, but will certainly remember it for next week as I have 100's of cookbooks that my husband laughs at me about! I hope you stop by sometime, and also post on my Friday (Fresh Clean and Pure Friday) blog party and/or my Seasonal Saturday party. PS....I made David Lebovitz' Peach Ice Cream last month (also posted) and it was ridiculously delicious. I have not purchased the book yet, but it seems inevitable!!!
